(1) Gordon Lacy comments: Bearing in mind the loads, these trains were expected to achieve timings that would have been regarded as 'too tight' in steam days. The fact that they came so close, showed exemplary skill on the part of the crews as well as all due credit to the engineers for the mechanical condition of the locos.
