(3) John Clifford comments: The tour was originally advertised as being hauled by 46100 'Royal Scot' but as this engine was not available 34046 was substituted. The train was to start and end at London Paddington but was changed to London Victoria because of engineering work. On the outward journey we stood at Worting Jn to let the 10.20 Waterloo - Exeter St Davids go ahead as had been allowed for in the timings. We ran slightly late after this but reached Bristol Temple Meads just 4 minutes late. On the return there were signal problems in the Bristol area so, although the E.C.S. arrived almost on time, the engine (with its support coach) arrived late. We set off behind the 17.30 Bristol - Paddington and the 16.30 Cardiff – Portsmouth. At Swindon we stopped on the Up Fast line to let the 16.24 Swansea - Paddington go ahead, which lost us some more time. After Reading we caught up the 19.07 Oxford - Paddington so the lateness increased. We did manage to pull back some of the arrears to arrive back under half an hour late.
