Terry Flavell 1941 - 2014

The sub-title for today's train is the Terry Flavell Memorial, remembering the loss a year ago of someone who was almost a 'fixture and fitting' on charter trains. and not just those of Pathfinder. As is commonplace amongst followers of all things 'rail', many of you will have spoken to him over the years, never knowing his name, because he enjoyed talking to (and insulting!) everyone he met, whether on a tour, at a preserved line, or on service train (he enjoyed bashing 'tin rockets' - Class 153s!). Terry was always happy to offer you a coffee, but if you were sat with him some distance from the buffet, you could never guarantee that it would still be hot by the time he got back as he knew at least someone at every other (or was it every?) table and would stop to talk.

But he was not just an enthusiast for the railway, being a keen follower of classical music and opera, and with a very good appreciation of food, allegedly a pretty good cook himself, even though he was known to eat his pudding before the main course! But then, Terry was never one to conform to the crowd - he actually liked Latin for example, but lest you think him old-fashioned, he was well up with comedy of the day, always willing to listen to something new.

After then there was football, not just as a spectator, but for many years as a referee, reaching the level of the Central League, meeting the likes of Shankly, Mercer and Clough, and even at that level making an impression, such that in a bookshop where Brian Clough was doing a signing, Brian recognised him and called him over for a chat. But that was Terry, once encountered, never forgotten.

Terry, we miss you.
