Brief Review (by Nigel Benning) :
Living in Bournemouth, whenever a tour starts from London at an early hour, I usually have to drive to a railhead closer to London in order to get there in time. Sometimes I opt for Southampton Parkway, but in this instance I opted to catch the 05:01 from Basingstoke. However, at 05:00 on Basingstoke station it was announced that owning to major problems at Eastleigh (power failure I think) the train was not expected until 06:15 at the earliest. Fortunately there was a Turbo service to Reading which connected into an HST for Paddington, so I was able to get to Euston in time for the tour.

The tour itself went virtually to plan with very few delays. Plenty of various routes were traversed over the Pennines behind a variety of locomotives. An excellent tour from the days when HRT still offered such 'Spin & Win' type tours.

And did I get back to Basingstoke okay - did I heck! The 22:35 left on time from Waterloo, but due to major engineering work at Winchfield we ended up sitting on the Down Fast near here for 30 minutes before reversing onto the Up Fast and proceeding southwards. Basingstoke was reached at 00:12 !
