This tour was run to coincide with the Open Day at Thornaby Depot. It was an early (ish!) start but a handy starting point for me. The day didn't get off to a good start however, as the lack of a guard resulted in a 36 minute late departure. By Bristol we were an hour late (RST) and by the time we changed locos at Sheffield we were nearly two hours late. A diversion was made to the booked route via Selby Canal and West junctions as apparently there was no signalman (maybe because it was a Sunday) and we took the mainline instead.
Arrival at Thornaby was 83 minutes late and as a result our departure time was put back 40 minutes to give everyone enough time to visit the Open Day. We departed just after 18:00 and we remained 40 minutes down as we left Sheffield. Between Derby and Birmingham we were due to travel via Lichfield City, Four Oaks and Aston, but engineering works meant we went via Tamworth instead. This meant we were only 15 minutes late by Birmingham New Street and this is more or less how it remained for the rest of the tour, with Salisbury being reached at 01:15 on the Monday morning, just 10 minutes late on the original schedule.
It had been a long day, but just consider all that Tractor haulage with six different locos as well. Excellent.
Note: I don't think we were the only tour having problems that day. Hertfordshire Rail Tours ran a tour from London to Thornaby with a dining option. But the wrong stock was sent out which didn't have a kitchen car! I think an attempt was made to get the correct stock available for the return journey.
