Notes :
(1) Despite what appeared to be a straightforward tour over familiar territory, this trip was beset by numerous difficulties not the least of which was the many engineers occupations of the line on this Sunday trip. The delays started right from the beginning with the buffet car staff and their supplies trapped in the elevator at Leeds. The run over Ais Gill was taken in fine style with no interruptions. A Type 1 diesel (class 20) assisted the train over Beattock, not helped by wrong line running north from Beattock station to Greskine. Good work on the return over the GSW route was spoiled by a dead stand near Carlisle for over twenty minutes. A spirited ascent of the Eden Valley seemed in the making when the brakes came on and an inspection of the engine took place at Culgaith. The crew had heard a distinct and ominous bang, the passengers thoughts turned to a late Sunday night rescue from the proverbial middle of nowhere. The crew's investigation revealed nothing obvious, but the pace of the A4 was toned down for the remainder of the journey, although time was gradually gained over the remaining miles. Max Birchenough adds: Despite the hitches, it was, I remember, a cracking run. 60019 cleared Blea Moor at about 60 on the outward run, touching 86 on the way down from Ais Gill, and reaching 82 along the Nith Valley on the way home. I also remember a beautiful cascade of sparks from the chimney as we left Skipton in the dark, on the last lap - who needs fireworks?!
