(2) John Clifford comments: The purpose of this trip was to provide an opportunity to visit the Gartell Light Railway and Yeovil Steam Centre (the latter celebrating the 20th anniversary of its opening). Passengers were split two groups. One group went by coach to the Gartell Light Railway from Templecombe while the other group stayed on the train to Yeovil. After a few hours at Gartell coaches took the first group to Yeovil and then took the second group to Gartell. After the Gartell visit coaches went back to Templecombe for those passengers to catch the train back to London Waterloo.
I was in the first group and on
arrival at Gartell three locos were found to be working:
No 1 'Amanda', a Bo-Bo diesel hydraulic with a body shell vaguely looking like a class '33', No. 6 'Mr G', an 0-4-2T, No. 9 'Jean', an 0-4-0 tender tank.
However, No. 6 failed after one trip and was replaced by No. 2 'Andrew', a Baguley- Drewry diesel hydraulic.
At Yeovil there were shuttles on their demonstration line. One train In use was formed of John Fowler 0-4-0 diesel mechanical no. 44 'Cockney Rebel' and 'Lord Fisher', an Andrew Barclay 0-4-0ST in top and tail mode with DMMU car no. 59515. The other train used 56303 with coach no. 21268. At Yeovil there were model railways, demonstrations of birds of prey and displays of railwayana, amongst other things.
